Exterior Stain and Varnish combines a semi-transparent timber stain with a clear varnish with added protection for a durable, gloss finish, perfect for your exterior timber and ready to battle the elements.

It highlights the timbers original characteristics to ensure nothing is lost, only enhanced. To do so, the Exterior Stain and Varnish comes in four complimenting colours, aligned with Feast Watson Timber and Deck Stain. These include our popular Black Japan, European Oak, Swan River Jarrah and Taman Merbau.

How to prepare Feast Watson Exterior Stain and Varnish:

The best results are because of great prep! Just follow these steps:

Bare Timber:
Do you have bare timber?
This will need to weather for two weeks in order for leaching of the tannins and oils to occur.

All other timbers need to weather for approximately 4-6 weeks.

We recommend that tannin rich timbers are regularly hosed with water to assist leaching during this time.
To coat new timber immediately, use Intergrain® UltraPrep Tannin and Oil Remover, following label instructions.
After weathering or using UltraPrep Tannin and Oil Remover, prepare timber for coating by washing with Feast Watson WOODCLEAN™, as per the label instructions.
Sand to a smooth surface and remove all sanding dust before coating.

Weathered Timber
How to prepare Weathered Timber:

Prepare weathered or grey timber by cleaning thoroughly with WOODCLEAN as per the instructions.
Remove stain and restore deteriorated surfaces by sanding. Remember to remove all sanding dust before coating.

Previously Coated Timber
How to prepare Previously Coated Timber:

Previously coated surfaces needs to be stripped or sanded back to bare timber before application.
Test if the surface is ready by sprinkling water onto the timber: - if the water absorbs into the timber, you're good to go. - If the water beads, further weathering, sanding or stripping is required.
Prepare timber for coating with WOODCLEAN as per the instructions.

How to apply Feast Watson Exterior Stain and Varnish:

Let's do this!

Just a few things before you get started:

Make sure you still love your colour. Test colour on an off-cut or inconspicuous area prior to staining the whole job.
Exterior Stain & Varnish should be stirred thoroughly before and during application with a flat blade stirrer taking care not to introduce bubbles.

Okay, let's get started!

Apply Exterior Stain & Varnish using a brush or spray.
- If spraying, Exterior Stain & Varnish may be thinned by using 10% mineral turpentine.
- Ensure edges and end grain are fully coated.
Apply three coats. If you have thinned your coating, apply a fourth coat.
- For smooth finish, remember to sand lightly between coats with fine grade sandpaper.
- If you have achieved your colour with the first coat, complete the following two coats with Feast Watson Weatherproof™ as additional coats of Exterior Stain & Varnish will intensify the colour.
Allow 12 hours drying between coats.

You're all done! Good job.

How to maintain my timber after using Feast Watson Stain and Varnish:

As you would anything else, regularly monitor the surface every 12 months for signs of colour loss or surface defects.
When required, lightly sand the surface to a dull finish and remove dust.
Recoat with additional coats of Exterior Stain & Varnish as per application instructions.
